The Greatest Fashion Faux-pas of 2010

Most of them are looked up to as idols for their out-of-the-box dressing styles, but guess the streak of experimenting went a tad further with some international celebrities who wore everything but elegance in 2010.

Talk of faux pas and one couldn't forget the invincible queen of disaster - Lady Gaga, who wore a meat frock at the MTV awards. If that wasn't it, she became a fright in white at another award ceremony.

Here's interesting list of fashion faux pas of 2010:

The tension on the tennis court took an airy turn with a wardrobe malfunction at the French Open that exposed Venus William's skin-tone shorts revealing much more than she had thought of, as the black lace outfit she designed rode up.

Pop diva Madonna too was hardly in vogue as she shocked her fans by sporting checked harem trousers, biker jacket and boots. American singer Gwen Stefani's fashion sense went for a toss when she shrouded in a shapeless black outfit - it was more startling because she is a designer herself.

Singer Rihanna got into the superhero mode with a green batwinged jumpsuit, designed by Alexandre Vauthier. A throwback to 1982, the suit perhaps should actually have been thrown back.

Skin show is not a big deal for celebs in the west. And it seems 49-year-old Susan Boyle is desperate to join the gang - the " Britain's Got Talent" star revealed a little more leg than she probably intended in a short floral skirt.

Singer Cheryl Cole brought back the memories of late pop legend Michael Jackson by getting into a military uniform and leotard combo but at an aerobics class.

Actress-singer Gwyneth Paltrow perhaps was looking for some air bath as she donned a dress that looked as if it had been held together with only strings to be precise.

"Pirates of the Caribbean" star Keira Knightley, who was rated as the second highest paid actress in 2008 by Forbes, seems to be spending less on her wardrobe. She dressed down in what looked like a tablecloth for a movie premiere.

When former "Friends" beauty Jennifer Aniston made an appearance wrapped around an orange-pink Christian Lacroix at the premiere of her movie "Bounty Hunter", it looked like a birthday ribbon frill.

And if you thought you only had the fair sex making errors when it came to dressing, hold on, there's British comedian Russell Brand to accompany them all. He was clicked tattered trouser and Henti T-shirt with height boots. After all he has not been voted as Hollywood's worst-dressed man of 2010 for nothing.

Fashion face off: Kate Middleton vs Zara Phillips

There looks like there could be a mini wedding fashion war brewing with the news that Zara Phillips is also engaged.

The Queen’s grand-daughter announced her engagement yesterday and although there are no official pictures yet, we’re sure that when they surface we’ll all be scrambling to get a similar look.

Unlike Kate, Zara’s style is that little bit more classic, which we presume is down to all her sporting hobbies such as horse riding and polo. She’s often spotted out in riding gear or dressed in a hat and frock at events. However, there’s also a playful side to her, and she’s not impartial to a cute on-trend frock or casual attire of linen trousers.

Kate Middleton’s look is more High Street than designer – and we love her for that. Her engagement dress was by Issa and she chose a white dress from Reiss’s last season collection for her official engagement pictures.

She’s also got the casual, yet classic look nailed with a range of floral frocks, boots and jeans. And she’s also a girl after our own hearts opting for hot pants and little tops when she goes clubbing.

But who do you think is the most stylish?

Top 10 Fashion Statements of 2010

Do you want to know what the Top 10 Fashion Statement of 2010 is? I’m sure you are curious too. So here’s my post regarding to that topic.

Lady Gaga

If making fashion statements is your primary raison d'ĂȘtre, it's easy to get bored. Exploding bra? Flamed out. Dress made of bubbles? Please. Using your hair as a bow? Not again. But a dress made of meat — with shoes, hat and purse to match — well, that's fresh. The carnivorous ensemble Lady Gaga wore to the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, which is pretty much mecca for eccentric musical sartorialists, raised many questions: What does it mean? How was it made? Does she want A.1. sauce with it? Gaga's explanation of the flank frock — that if we didn't stand up for our rights, we'd be nothing but meat on our bones — seemed disappointing. We prefer to think of it as haute cutlet.

M.I.A.

Anyone who performs at the Grammy Awards nine months pregnant and wearing a flesh-hugging body stocking is clearly unafraid of making extreme statements. Even so, there was a sharp intake of breath when singer M.I.A. turned up at an awards event this year in one of the most controversial garments of our era: a burqa. For many, it's a symbol of oppression, representing the systematic silencing of female voices. For others, it's a symbol of liberation, freeing the women who wear it from oversexualization or objectification of the female form. Either way, at least we know it's versatile. And this one had such a friendly print, it was hard to be offended.

Venus Williams

No, Williams was not wearing a nightie at the French Open; and yes, she was wearing underpants. The corset-style red-trimmed dress, which Venus designed herself, was not as transparent as it appeared — it was lined with fabric — and her undies were actually quite decent, if flesh in color. The athlete downplayed the chatter surrounding the ensemble, which is a part of her EleVen clothing collection. "The outfit is about illusion," she said. "And it's obviously lace and kind of having that illusion of wearing lace and not having anything under it." While it's unusual and possibly uncomfortable, it has its advantages: imagine the effect on an opponent if she believes Williams doesn't even need to get out of her negligee to hand her a whupping. Which she did, beating Patty Schnyder in straight sets.

Prince

It's a high-class problem, of course, but still a tough one: What do you wear to receive a lifetime-achievement award? What strikes the right tone of humility and gratitude? Prince, never one to shy away from excess — or high heels or big floppy sleeves — went with all three. His tunic, whose color palette echoed that of a vintage toothpaste tube, bore an image of a man who looked very much like the singer, as well as the glyph Prince used instead of his name for a while. At least he had a ready answer for the inevitable red-carpet question: Who are you wearing?

Rihanna

There are probably people who have as much fun getting dressed every day as Rihanna, but they just don't go out as often. Take the catsuit the singer wore to a German music-award festival in March: a cross between an academic robe and the Jolly Green Giant's pajamas, it's a difficult color and not superflattering. But what does it matter to Rihanna? If today's outfit doesn't communicate to the masses, she can make another fashion announcement tomorrow. Just like Gumby, whom she seems to be channeling, Rihanna is flexible.

Britney

This outfit should perhaps be known as the midcomeback dress. Britney Spears, attending a music-awards ceremony after a rough couple of years, could be making several statements here, some of them quite melancholy. "I have forgotten my pants," for example, or "I lost all my mirrors." Or, quite possibly, her bodysuit and sheer overlay are meant to suggest that she's almost making it, or that she simply does not care what you think of her. In any case, while it's not the most flattering thing she has ever worn, the outfit showed she is not going out of her way to avoid the spotlight.

Rita Wilson

When you get to walk the red carpet on the arm of Tom Hanks, you're afforded the opportunity to wear whatever the heck you want. Perhaps it was that freedom that influenced actress and producer Rita Wilson, Hanks' wife of 12 years, to choose a crystal-chandelier dress for the Emmy Awards in August. Wilson made it a head-to-toe Lucite affair by picking matching footwear. Not surprisingly, the ensemble was widely panned. But there's no denying Wilson held her own with the flashbulbs.

Taylor Momsen

As she navigates the tricky transition from Gossip Girl's good girl to rock singer, Taylor Momsen has made a number of iffy sartorial choices, including see-through dresses, garters and ripped tanks. But some wondered whether she crossed a line in October when she performed with her band in a rhinestone necklace that spelled out the world slave along with a dog collar attached to what looks like the beginning of a chain. Momsen, who's made no secret of her disaffection for having been signed to a modeling contract at age 2, might want to check a history book for a little perspective.

Charo

Where do crazy big-haired grannies go when they want to get dressed up? The Latin Grammy Awards always seem like a good spot. Charo, she of Love Boat fame, pulled out all the stops, and quite possibly some showgirl's hair extensions, for the event in Las Vegas in November. The Spanish-American actress, who's either 59 or 69 depending on whom you believe, took some flak, but from the looks of it, she still has the legs, guts and appetite for a high-calorie confection such as this, so we salute her.

Heidi Klum

It is the Season 8 finale of Lifetime's Project Runway. The judges are in a pitched battle. The fashion arbiters — designer Michael Kors and editor Nina Garcia — hate one particular outfit: a tight, bold, black-and-white dress designed by finalist Mondo Guerra. The fashion wearers — Heidi Klum and Jessica Simpson — love it. The discussion gets heated. Kors snips that Klum would never wear the dress to a red-carpet event. The arbiters take the day, and Guerra loses the competition. Just one month later, though, Klum slips into a sleeveless version of the contentious dress for a movie premiere. She was making the simplest of fashion statements, but one not printable on a family website.

Armani taps Chinese market with online store

MILAN (AFP) – Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani plans to tap the Chinese market with a new online store that opened Friday for Emporio Armani in one of the first such initiatives in China by a major fashion brand.

"In view of the increasing enthusiasm for online shopping and the growing importance of the Chinese market, I have decided to open an Emporio Armani online store in China," Armani was quoted as saying in a statement.
"We have identified a significant group of fashion consumers who will certainly appreciate this new approach to shopping, one that becomes more popular every day," Armani said, referring to the Chinese market.
Online retail sales in China, which has the world's largest web population of at least 420 million, soared 117 percent last year to 39 billion dollars (29 billion euros), according to iResearch, a Beijing-based research firm.
US fashion giant Gap launched an online store in China earlier this month and Wal-Mart -- the world's biggest retailer -- has said it too plans an Internet presence in China soon. Apple opened an online store in October.
Armani said it was "the first fashion brand to offer a 'flagship store' online experience in China." The website is backed by Yoox, an Italian online fashion retailer that has grown rapidly during the global economic crisis.
The Armani Group has more than 5,000 employees and 13 factories, producing clothes, as well as accessories, eyewear, watches, jewellery and perfume.
The group has 609 stores in 46 countries around the world.

Christina Aguilera gets Hollywood Star

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Grammy-winning US pop singer ChristinaAguilera was honored with a star on Hollywood's celebrity Walk of Fame, barely a week before her feature film debut.

The star, the 2,423rd on the famous sidewalk roll call of celebrities past and present, was unveiled on Monday, nine days before her acting skills go on display when "Burlesque" hits the silver screen, co-starring Cher.

"As a young girl in Pittsburgh, I often imagined what it would be like to come to Hollywood and make it as a performer," the 29-year-old told screaming fans on Hollywood Boulevard.

"We would go from audition to audition and I would sing anthem after anthem ... hoping one day it would all pay off. Standing here at this moment I know that it has paid off in spades," she added.

Aguilera won the first of her four Grammys in 1999 as best new artist, followed by best pop collaboration in 2001, and best female pop vocal performance in 2003 and 2006.

In "Burlesque," she plays a small-town girl who makes her way to a Los Angeles burlesque club to pursue her dreams. Aguilera also wrote and recorded four new songs for the musical's soundtrack.

At a weekend presentation of the film Aguilera told AFP: "I've always been a hard worker.

"I like to learn from others and having new challenges, and I think that's what happening to me now in my life. Many changes, a movie, a new album, and a star in Hollywood -- many changes.

Aguilera and her husband Jordan Bratman separated, five years after their 2005 wedding, although there were no divorce plans, People magazine reported.

No Bombs, Only Bombshells, Plus a $2 Million Bra, at the Victoria's Secret Show

New York – It's the highly coveted invitation that few people receive, but everyone wants: the taping of the annual Victoria's Secret fashion show. Held in the Lexington Armory in New York on Wednesday night, Nov. 10, it was bombs and bombshells in the building, and a whole lot of voyeurs in between.

Well, maybe not literally bombs - there were dogs sniffing purses for explosives to prevent that - but military memorabilia in glass cases lined the hallway as guests entered the custom built space that rivaled a Paris couture show in scale.

Plush, red padded stadium-style seating looked down on a very glittery gold runway, with seats towering some 30 feet up. Though the main attraction was 30 of the most beautiful women in the world clad in Victoria's Secret underwear and the show's signature angel wings, if you forgot your opera glasses that night or weren't sitting in the VIP sections, you were more likely to get an up-close-and-personal look at the back of the heads of business men in suits, who, not surprisingly, made up a good majority of the audience.

Adriana Lima

But if the custom bra and panty sets were hard to see, there were other more visible accoutrement on display, such as the aforementioned wings, as well as sporty-themed costumes and cowgirl-inspired get-ups. It was Halloween and "sexy" costumes-in-a-bag all over again on the runway. And glitter, lots and lots of it. A hundred pounds, to be exact, along with 30 bottles of Victoria's Secret "Shimmer Mist" and 40 cans of hairspray. No one said being beautiful was easy, or natural.

Despite the pounds of glitter, makeup artist Tom Pechaux said the look was inspired by the California girl, one of the most natural female archetypes around.

"This season we are playing with bronzer," he said as he applied makeup to Alessandra Ambrosio some eight hours before showtime. "It's more healthy, it's more dewy, more glow-y."

Adding to the spectacle, and cementing the "California Girls" theme, were live performances by Katy Perry and Akon. They played to a far more subdued audience than the usual screaming arena crowds they're likely used to, which might explain the canned applause that followed their respective performances. However, Vin Diesel put in a good show of support as he cheered them on, fist-pumping and clapping wildly from his front row seat.

The big ticket star of the night, however, was the $2 million "Bombshell Fantasy Bra" worn by Adriana Lima, covered with 60 carats of diamonds and 82 carats of sapphires and topaz stones with a pattern meant to evoke a swirling constellation, said Sylvia Damiani, vice president of Damiani, the jeweler who created the bra. And who might be lining up to buy this VIP bra?

"You know, it's a very special piece, and the kind of person that would eventually buy it is not that easy to find," said Damiani before the show. "I was thinking that the right person for it would be like a singer, a stage person. I see it more as a kind of piece that is something that you wear when you are a performer. Like Lady Gaga, or Katy Perry!"

For the Victoria's Secret models walking in the show, it was as much about performance as it was about modeling designer clothes - or lack thereof - on the runway. For some, that meant even more added pressure.

Chanel Iman, who closed the show in an elaborate, 30 pound bubble-wing ensemble, said that this show was definitely a different experience from her usual jobs during fashion week.

"It's a little bit stressful, just because you want to be amazing, and you want to just feel good in lingerie," she said. "It takes a lot to walk in front of a lot of people."

And even these top models had to follow strict diet and exercise routines in the days leading up to the show, like Behati Prinsloo.

"I saw my trainer every day for the last week just to do different things. I did Pilates, I did some boxing, and just drank loads of water, kept healthy, and slept."

But once the show was done, she had some big plans: "I'm going to have a huge steak, and a chocolate mousse cake. Devour everything that I want, and not work out for about two weeks!"

The televised version of the show airs on Tuesday, Nov. 30, on CBS.

Fashion Designing 'my drug': Pierre Cardin

French designer clothes fashion legend Pierre Cardin described his job as a "drug" that brings him the joys of life Tuesday, saying he would keep working in a career that has already spanned six decades.

"It's a job I love. It's my passion, it's my drug," Cardin, 88, told a press conference in Tokyo ahead of events to mark the 60th anniversary of his firm, which says it owns licences for around 1,000 products sold under his name.

Despite what many might think, "I still pursue it," said the last active survivor of the great postwar Paris fashion houses.

From his cluttered office Cardin runs one of the world's most successful fashion empires, which has remained under his sole ownership for 60 years, even as other couture houses have fallen to corporate buyers.

Cardin said being a designer had become harder as fashion now changes so fast.

"There are so many designers around the world. In every country it is impossible to change fashion every year because it's stupid," he said. "Designer Clothes are very expensive, you know.

"There are lot of designs that are beautiful, crazy, fantastic to the eyes. But they they are not fashion for tomorrow," he said, arguing they would not endure.
